Abstract

Objective: To evaluate rotavirus epidemic in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to contribute to the literature on rotavirus outbreak in the newborn.

Methods: An epidemic of rotavirus infection was seen in the NICU of our hospital in September 12, 2017 and October 15, 2017. Diagnosis of rotavirus infection in 10 patients was demonstrated by serological tests.

Results: Ten patient was diagnosed rotavirus infections which were analyzed. Mean gestastion age and mean birth weight 38±2.9 week, 3.075±706 gr respectively. Eight patient (80%) has diarrhea. Only one patient who was the first case had sekonder bacterimia. No other patients had additional complication.

Conclusion: Rotavirüs infection in newborns is usually mild, but should be followed up for complications. Strict disinfection methods and isolation of patients are required to control the epidemic.
