Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to establish the validity and reliability of a skill assessment scale developed to evaluate the developmental abilities of children in the play period (ages 1-3).

Methods: The study was applied to 317 parents with children aged 1-3 years between October 15 and November 10 in 2022. The validity of the scale was tested with content validity and construct validity. Test-retest, Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient and item total score correlation coefficient were examined to determine the scale reliability.

Results: The content validity index of the data is between 0.81 and 1. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value was 0.72 and Bartlett’s test p<0.000 (p<0.001). With exploratory factor analysis, it was determined that the scale consisted of 21 items and 4 sub-dimensions. Confirmatory factor analysis of the scale was performed. The fit indices were found as χ2/df=2,159, root mean square error of approximation=0.06, goodness of fit index=0.90, comparative fit index=0.85, normed fit index=0.75 and Tucker-Lewis index=0.82. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability value of the scale is 0.72, the test-retest correlation coefficient is 0.87, and the item-total score correlation coefficient is over 0.20.

Conclusion: The scale is a valid and reliable scale that can be used to evaluate the physical, cognitive, language development and social-emotional skills of children in the play period (1-3 years).
